grading
Grades in grades 5,6,7,8 are based on the following formula:
1. Homework/Jumpstart (20%)
A "jumpstart" is a quick check for understanding of the homework. In particular, it lets me know how well students have been preparing the assigned vocabulary. A graded "jumpstart" will be given frequently near the beginning of class.
-An opportunity to discuss the written homework assignment will always be given prior to the "jumpstart".
-Sometimes the "jumpstart" will be the homework itself, or a part of it.
-Often the "jumpstart" will be a written review of vocabulary.

2. reading/Writing activities (20%)
Each student will keep a reading/writing notebook in class. Most of the work in these areas will take place during the class period.
3. Listening/speaking activities (20%)
In addition to a variety of in-class listening/speaking activities, students will be required to show progress on their work with the Rosetta Stone program. Most of one weekly class will be devoted to working on this program. Students are encouraged to work on Rosetta Stone at home and any student having difficulty accessing the site at home may make arrangements to work on this during homework club. Grade 7 and 8 students are required to show a minimum of 5% progress every 3-4 weeks. Grade 5 and 6 students are required to show a minimum of 3% progress every 3-4 weeks.
4. vocabulary/grammar quizzes (20%)
A critical part of learning a new language is vocabulary acquisition. A quiz will be given upon the completion of each vocabulary list. Grammar quizzes will be given regularly to check that students have understood the grammar concepts that we have been work on.
5. major works (20%)
There will be 2-3 major pieces of work (projects, tests, compositions) each trimester. Together these will make up 20% of the grade for the trimester.
